BeginnersDrumlady Kristen Arant teaches how to SPEAK DRUM in this one-of-a-kind class designed to familiarize beginners with the drum, hand positioning, and a few essential Djembe rhythms.
Many of us have witnessed the modern-day fascination with the djembe and hand drumming in general, such as drum circles. This is partly because playing these drums, especially in groups, enhances joy, releases stress and frustration, and begins to heal us through the very first sound we ever heard—the heartbeat. Recent medical studies have highlighted a range of other health benefits for those who drum regularly.
Discover the beauty of this goblet-shaped membranaphone native to the Mande people of West Africa, including a basic overview of the drum's history, its purpose, and the vital role it played in the cultural life of the Mande people. Those interested in learning dununs (bass/stick drums) are also welcome. Kristen will provide an intricately detailed description of the proper technique for playing both the djembe and dunun drums.
We will then learn a group polyrhythm and experience the feeling of playing different parts that interconnect like pieces sewn one by one to create a beautiful rhythmic tapestry.
All are welcome; however, the classs are best suited for adults (kids 10 and up are welcome).
Intermediates
For djembe and dunun players with some experience, Drumlady K will help you STEP IT UP with more challenging rhythms, solo techniques and rolls, and instructions on how to play more efficiently and with greater speed. We will also explore improvisation, especially how it can be used during drum circles or other group drumming and musical activities.
